Rebecca's Homestead in Wantage, New Jersey, and some photos from the renovation.

In a heartwarming collaboration, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest New Jersey teamed up with the popular renovation show, George to the Rescue, to transform an all-purpose gathering space at Rebecca’s Homestead. This project not only provided a multi-functional area for residents but also highlighted the power of community and partnerships in creating meaningful change.

Leading the charge for Habitat for Humanity was Pam Vreeland of ʹapp Exceptional Realtors® and a crew of more than a dozen volunteers focused on improving the lives of the adult special needs residents that have made their home at Rebecca’s Homestead.

About Rebecca’s Homestead

is in Wantage, New Jersey. Its tagline is appropriately “Where All Are Welcome Inn.”  The goal of the facility and program is “to create an inclusive and sustainable community by providing differently abled adults housing and a self-sustaining lifestyle.”  Residents of the homestead participate in farming, gardening, art, and other hospitality employment opportunities as part of their daily routines.

Founders Dennis and Michele Elmers created Rebecca’s Homestead in honor of their daughter, Rebecca, and the friends they met along their journey to access adequate care and programs for disabled adults. Their desire was to create a space that focused on employment training and community and shied away from the traditional sense of a residential facility.

The multi-purpose room at Rebecca's Homestead before the renovation project.

The all-purpose, shared space at Rebecca’s Homestead is a vital part of the residential community, functioning as a hub for social gatherings, educational programs, and skill-building. However, the room had long needed a makeover to be handicap accessible and better serve its diverse purposes.

Vreeland, Habitat for Humanity Working to Build Communities

Pam Vreeland of ʹapp Exceptional Realtors.

Pam Vreeland has always been more than a real estate professional; she is a community builder at heart- whether within the professional community or various towns in northwest New Jersey. Vreeland has 25 years of experience working as a realtor and with local real estate professionals at the Sussex County Association, where she was named Realtor® of the Year in 2023. Additionally, she has headed committees for fundraising for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, coordinated blood drives, and dedicated numerous years to the Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation. Vreeland and her husband also own a farm where they rent part of the farm to offer therapy through animals for mental health, trauma, autism, and special needs.

However, Vreeland says she has found her passion project in Habitat for Humanity. Vreeland initially became involved with Habitat for Humanity after participating in Realtors® Care Day, a National Association of REALTORS® sponsored community outreach initiative. As part of the program, grants are available to members of the community for home repairs and renovations, and if awarded, are completed with the help of the local Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Vreeland joined as a board member in 2022.  After six months, she became the President of the chapter. The Sussex chapter previously worked with Rebecca’s Homestead to make repairs to the facility and build new additions for the residents. The chapter’s previous experience with Rebecca’s Homestead is how Vreeland and Habitat for Humanity identified the need to remodel the multi-purpose space.

George to the Rescue Steps In

The crew from George to the Rescue conversing during the renovation process.

The renovation project took an exciting turn when , the NBC show known for its heartfelt renovations, joined the effort. Hosted by George Oliphant, the show specializes in turning dreams into reality for deserving individuals and organizations. George and his team were immediately drawn to the story of Rebecca’s Homestead and the collaborative effort behind the renovation.

The team from George to the Rescue worked tirelessly to reimagine the space. The designers and staff paid careful attention to the needs and preferences of the residents, resulting in a room that would be both functional and welcoming. A crew of twelve members from Habitat for Humanity conducted the renovation work with help from sponsor, .

The vision included:

  • Accessible Design: Several architectural barriers were removed from the room layout, allowing for easy access for residents with mobility issues. Residents in wheelchairs would no longer struggle to enter or exit the space.
  • Adaptable Layouts: Organizational furniture, a mini-kitchenette, and open spaces were incorporated to accommodate various activities, from educational workshops to social and family gatherings.
  • Multi-Functional, Creative Spaces: The team added spaces equipped to manage art projects to encourage creativity and self-expression. The small kitchenette would make it easy to wash art supplies and make snacks.
  • Comfortable Atmosphere: Warm lighting, an upgraded ceiling, new flooring, cozy seating, and inviting décor were added to make the room feel like a place where residents and members of the local community would enjoy their time.

A Labor of Love

The team from George to the Rescue and Habitat for Humanity before getting started on the remodel project at Rebecca's Homestead.

The renovation process was a true labor of love with the Habitat for Humanity team and George’s crew working side by side. Throughout the process, the spirit of collaboration was palpable. Vreeland’s leadership and unwavering dedication inspired everyone involved. “Seeing people come together for a shared purpose was incredible,” she said. “This project is proof of the positive things that can come to fruition when we work together as a community, for our community.”

The Big Reveal

The big reveal of the remodeled multi-purpose room at Rebecca's Homestead.

The big reveal was a moment of pure joy for residents of Rebecca’s Homestead, one that the public will be able to enjoy when the episode airs on March X, 2025. As George unveiled the newly renovated space, big smiles and gratitude filled the room. Residents marveled at the thoughtful design and the possibilities the new space offered.

“When the renovation of the rec room was done, we took a group photo,” Vreeland explained. “As we were posing, one of the residents began to quietly sing ‘Amazing Grace.’ Normally head down and shy, he made his way over to his aide and his voice became louder. It was a visible and audible representation of how much this means to him, and how connected he is to the community and facilities at Rebecca’s Homestead. It inspired everyone involved in the project to continue to give their time and energy to changing lives- and we cannot wait for the next opportunity!”

People First Mentality

For Vreeland, the reveal was a poignant reminder of why she chose real estate, and why she chose to work under the ʹapp banner. “ʹapp has always emphasized the importance of people over profits,” she said. “I originally chose real estate because I had two young children and needed work-life balance. I have been blessed with the support of Doug Radford (Co-owner of ʹapp Exceptional Realtors®) and Cathy Kut (office manager), who encouraged me to get involved with Habitat. I would never work for anyone else. Between real estate and Habitat for Humanity, I fill my cup by helping those around me.”

As of January 2025, the Sussex chapter of Habitat for Humanity merged with Warren County, creating the newly formed Habitat for Humanity of Northwest New Jersey. Together, the group intends to continue to give back to the community and demonstrate the Realtor® spirit that shines through Vreeland and her peers.

A Legacy of Hope

A small wooden sign that says "do small things with great love."

The renovated space at Rebecca’s Homestead stands as a testament to the power of community and collaboration. It is a place where residents can come together, build skills, and create memories for years to come. More importantly, it is a symbol of hope and the belief that everyone deserves a chance to thrive.

Pam Vreeland, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest New Jersey, and George to the Rescue have left an indelible mark on Rebecca’s Homestead and the surrounding community. It is a shining example of how individuals and organizations can come together to make a difference.

“We continue to be impressed by Executives such as Pam Vreeland, who have a heart of service,” said Patrick van den Bossche, President of ʹapp International. “Real estate starts and ends with communities and the relationships one builds within them. The time spent on renovating the multi-purpose room at Rebecca’s Homestead may seem like a flash of time in the grand scheme of things, but its impact is exponential. It ties the volunteers, residents, and community together in a common goal where everyone reaps the benefits.” In a world that often feels divided, projects like this remind us of the incredible things we can achieve when we come together. With real estate professionals like Pam Vreeland and organizations like Habitat for Humanity and George to the Rescue leading the charge, the future looks bright for communities everywhere.

Attendees were thrilled to have Make-A-Wish representative Alyssa Muma and a special Make-A-Wish family, the Sweet family, join the festivities. Their presence served as a touching reminder of the impact the event would have on children’s lives.

A team dressed as Minions at the event.

The event was a delightful mix of Halloween-themed fun and heartfelt community engagement. Cosmic bowling, silent auctions, and a brought the community together for a night filled with laughter and purpose. Participants did not hold back on their creativity, donning impressive costumes that ranged from spooky to hilarious. Alyssa Muma took on the role of costume contest judge, awarding trophies to the best-dressed individual and team.

Team Effort

“Our talented team of Executives has been working hard for months to plan the event, secure sponsors, and collect items for our silent auction,” shared Bruce Vinnick. “As a family-focused company, we chose to partner with Make-a-Wish to help those in need. They shine a light of hope for children fighting critical illnesses when they need it most, and that is a cause that we can all get behind.”

The dedication of the ʹapp Oceanside team was evident in every detail of the event. The Executive Council Team, comprised of REALTORS® Iwona Baj, Kathy McEnaney, Marilyn Grum, and Jeanne Nix, played a pivotal role in organizing the event. Chris Freda, Marketing Manager with Professional Closing, added his expertise to the mix, contributing to the event’s seamless execution. The event was chaired by REALTOR® Shannon Vinnick and Administrative/Marketing Executive Josephine L’Heureux, whose passion and commitment were instrumental in its success.

Community Support Shines Bright

The event would not have been possible without the incredible support of local businesses and sponsors. The Stellar MLS/Stellar Cares Program served as the Event Sponsor, setting the stage for a night that combined professionalism with heartfelt giving.

“Great Pumpkin Sponsors” included LCI Taxes, Painting with Fin-S, Entek Engineering, Wilco Restoration, Terra Timber Restoration, and Jennifer Morrison/Adams Homes. Over 30 sponsors, 24 teams, and several individuals contributed to the event, demonstrating the community’s unwavering commitment to making a difference.

A Sold-Out Success

The support for Boo~ling for Wishes was nothing short of phenomenal. All 24 lanes at Palm Coast Lanes sold out, with 24 teams stepping up to bowl for a cause. Monetary donations poured in from those who could not attend, further underscoring the community’s dedication to granting wishes and bringing joy to children facing unimaginable challenges.

The team extended special thanks to Palm Coast Lanes for hosting the event and providing a venue that perfectly complemented the evening’s festive atmosphere.

Impacting Lives, One Wish at a Time

Beyond the fun and games, the heart of the evening lay in its purpose: to bring hope and joy to critically ill children. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has long been a beacon of light for families navigating difficult journeys, and ʹapp Oceanside’s efforts will now help grant three life-changing wishes.

“Bruce and Shannon Vinnick have been hosting events in support of Make-a-Wish since 2004,” said Alysia Heun, Vice President of ʹapp International. “They have service in their hearts, so it is no surprise that ʹapp Oceanside aligns with Make-a-Wish. It has been impressive and inspiring to watch their efforts grow over the years- now granting three wishes to children in need. It is simply amazing.”

The Sweet family at Boo-ling for Wishes.

Additionally, the presence of the Sweet family of St. Augustine, Florida, served as a poignant reminder of the tangible impact of these efforts. Seeing firsthand how Make-A-Wish changes lives inspired everyone in attendance to continue supporting this vital cause.

A Message of Gratitude and Hope

The ʹapp Oceanside team expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the event a success. From sponsors and donors to attendees and volunteers, the collective effort of the community demonstrated the power of unity and compassion.

“This event reminds us of the incredible strength of our community,” said Shannon Vinnick. “Together, we’ve not only raised funds but also raised spirits, proving that when we come together, we can create magic for those who need it most.”

Looking Forward

As the night ended, it was clear that Boo~ling for Wishes had become more than just a fundraiser; it was a celebration of community, generosity, and hope. The ʹapp Oceanside team is already looking forward to next year’s event, with dreams of making an even bigger impact. The 2nd Annual Boo~ling for Wishes was a resounding success, showing that when a community rallies together, extraordinary things happen. ʹapp Oceanside and its supporters have ensured that three children will have their dreams come true, proving that wishes really do have the power to change lives.

Known for its Mediterranean charm, rich culture, and incredible investment opportunities, Spain is fast becoming a favorite for international property seekers, particularly in the Costa del Sol region. This region offers a unique blend of sun-soaked beaches, vibrant lifestyle, and pleasant climate, drawing visitors from around the globe each year.

Positioned to the northeast of Gibraltar, the is roughly a 180-kilometer stretch of coast located in southern Spain. It includes Manilva, Casares, and Estepona on the west with Torrox, Frigiliana, and Nerja on the eastern side. There are numerous cities in between, including Malaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso.

Investing in Spain

As a locale that draws expats and tourists alike, rental properties in Spain and, particularly the Costa del Sol, are in high demand. These properties are much more affordable compared to other European hotspots, creating a high return on investment and significant property appreciation.

Spain’s Golden Visa program, which offered residency through property investment, helped Americans, Canadians, and other global investors begin to consider Spain as a long-term investment option. Although the Spanish government announced the end of the , no end date has been established, leading many to believe that the program will be reformed rather than eliminated.

Whether buyers are seeking luxury villas, beachfront apartments, or traditional Andalusian homes, the Costa del Sol offers a wide range of investment opportunities.

Why the Costa del Sol?

Buildings situated in Marbella, Spain.
Marbella is known as a popular resort city in Costa del Sol.

The Costa del Sol is one of Europe’s most glamorous yet accessible regions. From Marbella to Estepona, the area boasts a mix of old-world charm and modern sophistication. Estepona, often dubbed “The New Marbella,” offers the same high-end lifestyle but at a more affordable price point, making it a smart investment.

High-end restaurants, shopping, museums, and more are plentiful in Costa del Sol.

The region boasts a pleasant climate year-round and has a substantial expat community where English is commonly spoken.  With a mix of high-end restaurants and shopping, plentiful waterfront properties and coastal views, the Costa del Sol provides an appealing and affordable option in comparison to coastal cities in the US and other countries.

Additionally, the region’s strategic location near major international airports, including Málaga-Costa del Sol and Gibraltar, ensures excellent connectivity to Europe and beyond. This has driven interest from international investors and holiday home buyers alike. Whether for a second home or short-term vacation rentals, the Costa del Sol presents an opportunity for both capital appreciation and rental income.

Connecting with an International Property Specialist

When searching for investment opportunities abroad, it is wise to look for realtors that have completed the (CIPS®) designation. This designation prepares real estate agents to manage complexities in international transactions such as market conditions, tax issues, financing laws, and more.

In Spain, where real estate agent regulations are more relaxed than in the United States, it is essential for international investors to collaborate with a professional who understands the market and can provide timely insights.

June 1, 2024, was a momentous day for The Energized Team of ʹapp Premiere. New office doors proudly opened on the corner of 3rd Street and Campbell in Geneva, Illinois- a symbol of the team’s expansion plan coming to fruition.

“Our team had significant success in expanding business into the Fox Valley area, frequently earning listings in Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles, and surrounding areas,” said Becky VanderVeen, Team Lead and Owner of The Energized Team, Inc. “Having a physical presence in the community was our natural next step and will allow us to further develop our market expertise and best serve our clientele.”

For years, The Energized Team has focused on enhancing the client experience by providing comprehensive, seamless service and building trust and long-term relationships in the competitive Illinois real estate market. Their team members’ mix of diverse skills, expertise, and resources have exponentially increased their reach and success- now allowing them to expand into Fox Valley- an opportunity they are excited to capitalize on, especially with the team’s desire to grow the business.

Forming the Business

The Energized Team, Inc. formed in April 1999 when top producer Karen Pokorney sold her real estate business to area top producer Becky Chase VanderVeen. Both women were working under the guidance and leadership provided by Broker/Owner Pat Callan of ʹapp Premiere in Wheaton, Illinois.

Pokorney began her real estate career in the Illinois market in 1993. By 1994, her high-energy, spirit, and passion for real estate earned her the moniker of “The Energized Realtor.” Five years later, with plans to relocate to Arizona looming, Pokorney began looking for a professional to take over the business. She found a kindred spirit in VanderVeen.

“I knew that my real estate business in Illinois could continue to thrive by partnering with an entrepreneur who shared my energy, passion, and work ethic,” said Pokorney. “Becky fit the mold, and I was confident that transferring the business to her would result in my clients continuing to receive top-notch service while scaling toward a bigger, stronger business in the future.”

The Team Evolution

Pokorney’s relocation to Phoenix, Arizona, sparked the first evolution of The Energized Team. At that time, the team’s ownership transitioned to VanderVeen and team member Diane Lynch.

In 2006, VanderVeen and Lynch welcomed a new licensee, Eric Logan. Logan’s role began as an advertising and marketing partner, but his commitment to real estate quickly helped him achieve top producer status. It became clear that Logan was a great culture fit and was crucial to the team’s future growth and expansion. Logan became a team owner and business partner with VanderVeen in 2014.

“In 2012, Becky and I had a business coach named Dave McGhee with Buffini & Company. Dave began to assist us in putting our team together, so we could work as a seamless organization. In 2014, Becky and I implemented these strategies with our team,” said Logan. “Our Energized Team has evolved over the years, and has become a dynamic, thriving entity. Each team member possesses unique gifts which are integral to the team working as a cohesive unit. Our team culture is ALL about personal growth and development. We serve our clients with the best of our abilities, and as we grow personally, our service becomes more impactful and fruitful. As we touch those around us in a positive way, while providing superior service, we get a steady stream of referrals that come in week after week. We understand that as we sow good seeds, our team will reap a bountiful harvest. I am grateful to be a part of this thriving team, and to have met Becky VanderVeen in 2004. The sky’s the limit!”

The Team Today

The Energized Team, Inc., now in their new location in Geneva, boasts seven fantastic team members:

Diane Lynch– licensed realtor and 25-year veteran team coordinator, owner and operator of DL Property Management

Chris Fernald– unlicensed transaction coordinator

Danielle Jostes– unlicensed team member and certified stager/home preparation specialist

Jessie Carlson– licensed realtor (specializing in the far western suburbs)

Kerri Galas– licensed realtor (the Glen Ellyn and surrounding areas expert)

Much of their concentration has been in Wheaton, Warrenville, Winfield, Glen Ellyn, and surrounding suburbs, but the team will go anywhere and everywhere their clients want to go in Illinois. From the city of Chicago to the farmlands of Leland and Newark, the team is committed to representing buyers and sellers in the largest investment in their lives.

“I speak on behalf of our entire brokerage at ʹapp Premiere when I say that we are thrilled to see The Energized Group growing their business and brand,” said Jenny Holloway, Managing Broker. “Becky, Eric, and the team have been leaders in our office for years and work hard to reach their professional and personal goals. It is inspiring to see where a real estate career can go, and the power generated by the right people. They are helping hundreds of people achieve their goals of homeownership.”

Although Pokorney is no longer in Illinois, “The Energized Realtor” is still leveraging her expertise to build and evolve her real estate practice, though it is now rooted in the desert instead of the windy city. A long-time Executive with ʹapp Phoenix, Pokorney heads up Arizona Real Estate Group, a full-service real estate team consisting of daughter Kimberli Edington, husband Brad Pokorney, and daughter-in-law Ashleigh Pokorney. The team has earned Top Team, Double Diamond, and Diamond Awards for their recent sales, and serves clients in the Phoenix Metro area all the way to the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains.

“To be successful in real estate, you must keep in mind that people are behind every transaction. Finding the right partners in business is just as important as a client selecting the right agent to advocate for them. Watching The Energized Team grow and expand, now opening their own office, tells me that I found the right person when I sold the business to Becky. Simultaneously, I am growing a team in Arizona, with my family, and creating my legacy. What a journey for both of us!” said Pokorney.

Moving Forward in Real Estate

As demonstrated by The Energized Team and Arizona Real Estate Group, a career in real estate is often a dynamic and rewarding journey, offering diverse pathways for growth. It is not always predictable, but opportunities arise around every corner (and across state lines). Building with an intention to scale, choosing the right partners, and leading in the spirit of service can take a real estate practice to the next level.

“We believe in healthy growth and making mindful business decisions,” said Patrick van den Bossche, President of ʹapp International. “The Energized Team and Arizona Real Estate Group are prime examples of local experts who have grown their businesses with patience, intention, and a ‘people-first’ mentality. We are proud to call them Executives as they continue to build their brands.”

ʹapp of Flagstaff, Flagstaff’s longest running real estate business, has helped thousands of families find a place to call home over the years. But for the company, the commitment to homeownership runs deeper than real estate transactions. The brokerage has fostered a culture of giving back and has been deeply involved with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona for over 25 years.

Getting Started

The brokerage has proudly supported Habitat for Humanity for over 25 years.

The brokerage’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona began in 1998 when a client of Wayne McCormick, owner and Designated Broker of ʹapp of Flagstaff, invited him to join the Family Partnership Committee. The following year his wife, Debra McCormick, attended a meeting in his place. This led to Debra joining the committee and later serving as the committee’s Chairman for two years. Many hours were spent side by side with the local community, hammer and paintbrush in hand, building and improving homes for local families.

After their service with the committee ended, Wayne and Debra continued to support Habitat for Humanity each year through tax credits.

Launching the Realtor’s Initiative

In 2014, ʹapp of Flagstaff announced a new program in support of the community: The Realtor’s Initiative. The program encourages ʹapp agents to donate a portion of their commission income from every home sale to Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona.  Currently 29 of the firm’s Executives participate in the program, and funds are used to build affordable housing in the local community.

“As a Flagstaff local, I know the struggle that families face when it comes to housing in Flagstaff.  That is why I give to Habitat for Humanity via The Realtor’s Initiative.  As a community, we need to do anything we can to help families achieve the American dream, which includes homeownership and a sense of belonging to the community,” said Gary Nelson, Delegated Broker of ʹapp of Flagstaff.

Participation in the program has grown over the years, with nearly $20,000 generated in 2022. The group has donated nearly $11,000 during 2023 and has plans for a December raffle to finish out the year’s contributions.

The Starter Home Program

In 2022, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona broke ground on a new initiative called the .  This project involves building simple, efficient, stand-alone homes that are available for purchase by low-income families. The organization hopes to complete 50 homes by 2028, which would have a significant impact on Flagstaff’s housing inventory.

Homebuyers participating in the program purchase the Starter Home with a $1,000 down payment.  The homes are financed with Habitat-funded zero percent interest loans, with the $833 monthly principal payments going to a savings account for the homeowner.  When the homeowner moves out, Habitat for Humanity pays them the principal they have invested during the years occupying the home- roughly $10,000 per year.  This model allows families to build equity savings that can be used when they have outgrown their Starter Home. Habitat for Humanity reserves the right to the property, so another low-income family has the opportunity to purchase the home, ensuring affordable housing remains available.

The first two homes were successfully completed by several community partners, including architects, builders, and students from Coconino Community College. The students were part of The Home Construction Pathway, a two-semester program that provides a robust home construction experience through building Starter Homes. This significantly helped drive down labor and construction costs, two factors that impact housing affordability in Flagstaff.  The homes were built on land donated from the city of Flagstaff’s Land Trust Program, and 12 more homes are planned in the near future on Flagstaff Unified School District property.  These homes will support teachers and staff in the area.

“At the core of Habitat for Humanity’s mission is the belief in providing a hand up rather than a handout.  The Starter Homes offer individuals and families the opportunity to purchase affordable homes, setting the stage for a brighter financial future.  Homeownership, as one of the highest indicators of generational wealth, initiates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the initial homeowner,” explains Kim Geile-Gonzalez, Realtor® with ʹapp of Flagstaff. “I choose to support Habitat for Humanity both financially and as a board member because I have witnessed the transformative power of affordable homeownership and its profound impact on generational wealth.”

A Legacy of Giving

ʹapp of Flagstaff sponsored and decorated panels as part of “Framing Flagstaff’s Future.” The panels were used in the construction of the second Starter Home.

With over two decades of community support under their belts, the group at ʹapp of Flagstaff has built a thriving culture of giving.  Over the years they have contributed commission dollars, sponsored studs, decorated framing panels, raffled playhouses, and more. They continuously brave the cold to walk through homes to witness the smiles on the faces of new homeowners. They are interwoven into the community as business owners, residents, and friends. Collectively, they know that their work has just begun.

“I have been involved with Habitat for Humanity since 2008.  I have painted walls, helped homeowners apply to be accepted into the program, and donated a portion of my commissions.  It is incredibly rewarding to see members of our community strive for and achieve homeownership with a little help from the Flagstaff community around them,” said Tammara Prager, Realtor® with the firm. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with Habitat and with the Flagstaff community.”

About HFHNA: Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona is one of 13 Habitat for Humanity affiliates serving Arizona.  The organization brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope with the vision of creating safe and decent housing for everyone.  They believe that homeownership can permanently break the cycle of poverty and instability in communities.  To learn more, visit .
