Dear introverts, we know it’s difficult to read this, but getting to know your neighbors and allowing them to get to know you can truly be a lifesaver. Especially if you live alone in a new neighborhood like many students and young professionals. It’s overwhelming, true, establishing that initial contact with strangers who happen to live next door. However, the benefits far outweigh the anxiety you must be feeling. Indeed, extroverted people have it easier breaking the ice in a blink of an eye. The good thing is you can learn a thing or two from them.

Know thy neighbor and the best moment to approach

First things first. Before you rent an apartment, you should explore your neighborhood online. Find a platform with building or neighborhood reviews and go through them. They will give you valuable insight into what kind of community you can expect after you move in.聽

It is not the same if you’re moving to an apartment building or a family house. It is much more difficult to introduce yourself to neighbors in a building, though not impossible. Also, it is tough to guess the best time to initiate contact and not seem pushy. Usually, we’re all on tight schedules so choosing the right time to approach is vital. If your neighbor doesn’t seem in a hurry, you should take the opportunity. Offer to lend a hand if they’re coming back from the grocery store or if they’re returning from walking their dog. A simple hello, I’m your new neighbor is a good start.

Great minds think alike

The best way to introduce yourself to new neighbors is to make yourself visible. Don’t be that one neighbor that doesn’t talk to anyone. Greeting people with a smile and a few friendly words doesn’t cost a thing. Over time, you will notice more things about them which can serve as conversation starters. People bond over things they like but also over things they both dislike. The weather is always a safe topic.

Furthermore, you can use sports to initiate a conversation. Maybe you’ll meet your neighbor at a game or take kids to the same soccer practice. If you see your neighbor wearing apparel featuring your favorite team you can safely comment on the last game. Sometimes, team affiliation, hobbies or preferences are not so obvious. So, before you and invite your neighbors for a game or two, find out if your neighbors even like to play pool or if there’s something else you could invite them to join.

Host a party and introduce yourself to new neighbors

Whether you live in an apartment building or a suburban house, make the effort to invite your closest neighbors to a housewarming party. Do it while most of your belongings are still packed. Your new neighbors might offer to help you assemble furniture, hang paintings or chandeliers or lend you a tool. Don’t talk too much about yourself; while introducing yourself is important, so is learning about your neighbors. Don’t forget to exchange phone numbers before they leave.

Inviting your neighbors to a housewarming party has one more benefit. Since they live close by they will likely know which item you might cherish the most after moving in. Don’t underestimate your neighbors and expect imaginative gifts for first-time homeowners. Everything from tool kits to meal delivery subscription for your first month counts as helpful.

Meet a neighbor to meet more neighbors

You don’t have to meet everybody at once. Even though a housewarming party has become a tradition, it may not suit you. You can meet a neighbor or two at first and then ask them to introduce you to other neighbors they know. The best way to do this is organize a get together at your home. However, before you invite anyone over, consider hiring a cleaning service and get your new home squeaky clean. After all, you only get one chance to make the first impression and you should make it count. Moreover, it is normal to feel insecure and your neighbors will most likely understand that. Asking them to help you become a part of the community will also make them feel like an important part of the same community.聽

Get involved

A neighbor may contact you directly once you move in and invite you to join a group activity. It is not unusual that neighbors in close-knit communities gather over common interests or goals. You should accept, as it is a great opportunity to meet people and introduce yourself to new neighbors. However, you don’t need to do anything on a large scale to get noticed.

Doing small favors for your neighbors when the right opportunity arises is one of those things. In the time of online shopping, it frequently happens that a shipment gets delivered to a neighbor. Use this as an opportunity to get in touch but make sure you’re not pushy, indiscreet or invasive. Helping others makes most people feel good so don’t hesitate to ask your next-door-neighbor for assistance or a piece of information.

To sum up

Before you start worrying, remember that your new neighbors were once new neighbors themselves. They probably know well how it feels to be the new kid on the block. If they don’t approach you first, they will likely be ready to offer assistance if you kindly ask them for help. Additionally, ask yourself what would you like in a neighbor. Certainly, a person who is kind, friendly, discreet, sincere, and approachable. When you sum it all up, it seems that the same things that make a good neighbor also make a good person. So, let it show!

For the past five years or so, Waunakee鈥檚 Wine Walks have drawn hundreds to the downtown area to visit the shops and experience a night out.

But many may not realize that the event, organized by a small group of energetic women, raises funds to help the community.

The Waunakee Professional Women鈥檚 group, or WPW, is a 501 漏 3 nonprofit and uses the proceeds for college scholarships and to help Waunakee residents in need.

One is a patient of a local dentist facing extensive dental work he cannot afford. WPW is donating funds to cover a portion of the cost, said Sheryl Schroeder, one of WPW鈥檚 board members.

With Schroeder, Rena Ripp, Kristy Crosby and Mary Horras also serve on WPW鈥檚 board of directors, and together with volunteers, they plan events throughout the community.

鈥淎nyone can join. There鈥檚 no charge, We focus on raising money for people with various needs,鈥 Ripp said.

This year, WPW will award three $1,000 scholarships to young women with entrepreneurial aspirations. These will be the eighth scholarships WPW has awarded.

Selection is based not on grade point averages, but entrepreneurial spirit and community involvement.

鈥淲e look at what鈥檚 their passion?鈥 Schroeder said. 鈥淲e just look at it as where鈥檚 their heart, where are they giving back?鈥

Giving the scholarship is rewarding, and the recipients march with WPW in the WaunaFest Parade.

Horras, who owns Simply Unique stores in Waunakee and Shullsburg, heads up the Waunakee Wine Walk. As the owner of the Main Street store, she鈥檚 easy to find in the community and has been successful in securing sponsors for the event, Ripp said.

The Wine Walk has also been a means to bring people to Waunakee鈥檚 downtown business district during the holiday season. Tickets to the Wine Walk sell out quickly, but with a horse-drawn wagon ride and food carts downtown, the event is an attraction with or without the wine tasting.

WPW members are busy professionals. Ripp is a Realtor with 皇冠体育app Cooper Spransy, Crosby owns Moonstruck Media Production, and Schroeder is with Coldwell Banker Success.

But all are Waunakee area residents who want to be involved and give back to their community.

They鈥檙e planning new events, as well, such as the May 11 Marcella Fun Run at Schumacher Farm Park, named for Marcella Schumacher Pendall, who donated her family鈥檚 farm to Dane County for the park. Sarah Whitley of Old National Bank and Kelly Haas from Orange Shoe Gym are both helping to head up the run.

鈥淲e try to engage local businesses in the community,鈥 Schroeder said.

Sponsored by Old National Bank, TDS and LSM Chiropractic, it will include a 5k trail run for kids at 1 p.m. followed by a 5k relay at 2 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the race will be split between Schumacher Farm Park and WPW.

WPW has organized other community projects, such as sewing groups to provide blankets to Waunakee seniors, and has provided funds for the Waunakee Public Library鈥檚 capital campaign. WPW has also assisted community members in need, including seniors behind on their utility bills or who need an appliance replaced.

The group is open to women who live, work or own their business in the Waunakee school district.

Glenn Stein and his team at Realty Executive in The Villages have had a busy year impacting their community.

They help wherever they see a need, donating approximately $18,000-$20,000 to different local charities each year including Combat to Careers. Most recently, they hosted a musical bingo tournament which raised funds for children in need and are preparing to help host the Vietnam Wall Memorial in The Villages over Veteran鈥檚 Day.

However, Stein鈥檚 main focus is to help underprivileged children, a cause he holds close to his heart.

鈥淚 grew up as a homeless child myself,鈥 Stein said. 鈥淚t was just my mom and we lived in New York City and she didn鈥檛 make a lot of money. There were times in my childhood when we were just homeless. I wanted to move away from that and I have a heart for homeless kids. As I鈥檝e done well in a lot of great ways, I see an opportunity to help other people.鈥

In September, he saw a need at a local soup kitchen in Wildwood, a community adjacent to The Villages. Homeless children who rely on their schools for meals during the school year turn to the soup kitchen during the summer. The soup kitchen was running low on food and the kids weren鈥檛 getting what they needed. Steins office donated about $3,000 and held a canned food drive to help refill the kitchen.

In addition to donating food, 皇冠体育app in The Villages provided baseball uniforms for Wildwood kids who struggled to buy their own. They also helped buy school uniforms for Puerto Rican students who moved the Wildwood after being affected by hurricane Irma.

皇冠体育app in The Villages is also a strong supporter of the St. Jude’s Foundation , donating between $8 -10Kfor the past three years.

Stein believes 聽it is important to give back and support surrounding communities that are less fortunate. Stein credits his agents for keeping their ears open and paying attention to what鈥檚 going on in the community.

鈥99 percent of the people in our area are older than 55,鈥 Stein said. 鈥淭he Villages in Florida is pretty much a retirement community so most people in the community are not poor. It鈥檚 pretty affluent. We saw a need and there are a lot of vets in the community. It also helps that a lot of people know people.鈥

He looks forward to continuing his charitable efforts and making a difference in the community.
