A modern kitchen with blue cabinetry and open shelving.

Whether you are hoping to increase the value of your home or simply want to rid yourself of an outdated eyesore, upgrading your kitchen is an excellent option for any homeowner. Contrary to popular belief, upgrades don鈥檛 have to break the bank or be life-altering changes.

In the case of your kitchen, there are plenty of ways to make inexpensive changes that boost the appearance of your home and may help you reach a higher price tag when it comes time to sell. Below are a few options for upgrades under $100 that make a huge splash!

1. Add a Coffee Bar

If you鈥檝e got an empty portion of your counter or, even better, a nook, a coffee bar can be an excellent option to elevate your space. Best of all, it鈥檚 easy and cheap, and useful! Purchase jars to pour coffee supplies into and inexpensive display mugs for a simple, elegant swap. No need for building or dismantling here – you鈥檒l be able to create an adorable space with little work!

2. Paint the Cabinets

Painting over old wooden kitchen cabinetry.

Cabinets, especially in older builds, can be outdated and dull. Rather than completely replacing them, an overhaul that could easily cost tens of thousands of dollars, ! Not only will it significantly improve the look of old, faded wood, but the cabinets can become an inexpensive statement piece. Have a mostly white kitchen? Try rich blue cabinets! Looking to brighten the space? Convert your dark wood cabinets to a bright white or pale grey. If you鈥檙e feeling ambitious, try the tuxedo method by painting your top cabinets a different shade than the bottom ones for a contrasting, sophisticated look.

3. Add a Inexpensive Backsplash

You may think your only option is to cut some real tile and create a swoon-worthy subway tile backsplash. However, you can opt for the cheap alternative: peel and stick tiles. There are plenty of options online for various colors and styles. Best of all, it鈥檚 a temporary alteration 鈥 one that can be taken down when needed or swapped out when you鈥檙e bored. It鈥檚 a great option for renters who want to upgrade their space!

4. Add a Statement Light Piece

A statement light piece to upgrade your kitchen.

Paired with a fresh paint job, a new lighting system can seriously improve your kitchen鈥檚 appearance. A beautiful light fixture hanging in the middle of your kitchen or over the sink will transform the space, helping to achieve the style you鈥檇 like. Want a stripped-down industrial look? Try wire lighting with . Prefer a pop of bright light and color? Try opting for a multi-colored, modern fixture that catches the attention of all visitors.

5. Upgrade Hardware

When it comes to cabinets, be sure to add some new hardware. The handle or the nob you use for your cupboard can add more texture, shine, or a pop of color to the kitchen, especially with mono-color schemes. It鈥檚 a minute detail, but the difference is immeasurable. From brassy handles to crystal nobs, the hardware reinforces the feel of your space and can complement your vision. Similarly, new faucet hardware can make a world of difference for your countertops. Purchasing a nice faucet at a home improvement store and installing it yourself can be an excellent money-saving hack.

6. Pantry and Counter Organization

Jars and cannisters to organize food on a shelf.

While this can be overlooked, what鈥檚 on the inside of your kitchen cabinets matters just as much as what is outside. Take some time to organize your cabinets, pantry space, and countertops using matching, tidy jars where it makes sense. These jars can hold large amounts of baking ingredients, coffee, kids鈥 snacks, and more. This frees up space and makes your kitchen look less cluttered.

7. Wallpaper

Adding wallpaper can be a great way to alter a focal wall without making a permanent change or breaking the bank. Opting for a fun but manageable pattern helps to bring in a pop of color and will add a layer of uniqueness that complements the rest of your kitchen space. With a statement wallpaper piece, you can often avoid other changes because the wallpaper carries a lot of weight. For example, painting the cabinets for a pop of color may not be necessary with a vibrant wallpaper behind the cabinets.

8. Open the Space with Shelving

Open shelving used to upgrade your kitchen.

One difference between homes-built decades ago and homes built more recently is the open shelving concept. Where there used to be cabinet-lined walls to store goods, you can now opt for floating shelves and glass-front cabinets, perfect for artistic displays. Although adding open shelving is inexpensive, before removing any cabinetry, make sure that you have enough cabinet space to accommodate all your dishware and appliances. Knocking out a cabinet or two allows the kitchen to feel more spacious and luxurious.

If your kitchen needs a pick-me-up, consider these eight inexpensive ways to upgrade your kitchen before committing to a major remodel.  You鈥檒l be able to see which design elements look the best while maximizing function in your space. With a little effort, your kitchen can feel new!

A couple working on a home improvement project together.

Which home improvement projects should you DIY, and which ones require professional help? We have all heard the old saying, 鈥測ou get what you pay for.鈥 But sometimes it鈥檚 what you should have paid for that ends up costing the most money, time, and energy. Here, we break down the dos and don鈥檛s of do-it-yourself home improvement projects.

DO: Start a Garden

A woman planting a new garden.

Almost anyone can tackle this easy home improvement project. Simply decide where you鈥檇 like , what you鈥檇 like to see pop up (flowers? vegetables?) and grab your gardening gloves. Of course, the condition of your soil will make a difference, and supplementing may be necessary. Soil lacking in minerals and nutrients may need . Before getting started on your dream garden, it鈥檚 a good idea to have the soil pH evaluated since plants can鈥檛 properly take in nutrients if the pH balance is off. Check your state鈥檚 to see if they offer soil evaluations.

DO: Create a Backyard Oasis

A backyard oasis showing an achievable home improvement project.

If you can dream it, you can achieve it – at least when it comes to the look and feel of your backyard鈥檚 overall design. From colorful throw pillows (in outdoor fabrics, of course) to furniture in low-maintenance materials like rattan to clever storage units that double as tables or footstools – it鈥檚 fun to create an entertaining yet relaxing space that meets your family鈥檚 needs.

DON’T: Paint High Ceilings

Man painting a high ceiling with two windows.

Ask anyone who鈥檚 tried to paint a ceiling and you鈥檙e sure to get a grimace and lots of head shaking. It鈥檚 not an easy project, but it with proper preparation. Rookie mistakes include forgetting to lock your pets out of the room (while you鈥檙e on a ladder looking up… with a paint roller above you — need we say more?), trying to paint over a popcorn ceiling without first removing the texture, and the most non-intuitive mistake in painting- leaving overlap marks because you took your time. Proceed with caution on this DIY home improvement project.

DON’T: Tile Kitchen Backsplashes or Floors

A professional tackling the complicated home improvement project of laying a tile backsplash.

Your kitchen is the most high-traffic area in your home, and likely one of the first things guests will notice when they walk in the front door. So why take chances trying to affix a backsplash or lay down a complicated tile pattern on the floor? Unlike painting where you want to keep up the pace to avoid leaving marks, you definitely prepping surfaces and spreading grout. A bad DIY tile job can be spotted a mile away and usually comes with a side of regret.

DON’T: Lay Carpet

A man laying carpet in a room.

Avoid this DIY home improvement project at all costs, if possible! requires a lot of muscle, specialized tools, equipment, and know-how. Not to mention, carpeting can be expensive and needs to be precisely measured and cut, considering the transition areas near the borders of the room. It鈥檚 hard to get the measurements right, and most DIY carpet projects end up looking like a big mess. Carpet also needs to acclimate to your climate and setting – and who wants to guess at the length of time needed for that? Definitely not recommended unless you鈥檙e a pro.

DEFINITELY DON’T: Tackle Complicated Plumbing Projects

A professional plumber tackling a leak under the sink.

The rule when it comes to plumbing is simple: measure twice, cut once, then call the plumber. Sure, you may be able to fix a small leak under the sink, but you may also make it worse and ruin your hardwood floors or carpet. More complicated jobs, such as trying to repair a leak in your sewer line, could be dangerous because those lines contain toxic materials.

It鈥檚 best to know your limits when tackling DIY projects. Do what you can, realistically, and leave the rest to the professionals. That way, you鈥檒l have some time to relax and enjoy your home鈥檚 beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces.

Have you ever thought about tying the knot in your own backyard, or offering it up to someone in need of a wedding venue? Saying “I do” in a place close to your heart certainly has its advantages. Still, pulling it off without a hitch requires some special planning. Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning or hosting a backyard wedding.

Define Roles

There are many reasons to opt for a backyard wedding over a traditional venue, including a more informal vibe. While hosting one may appeal to the DIYer in you, be realistic about your to-do list. How long would it take to make centerpieces, place cards, and gift bags for everyone invited? Do you know who to call for rentals, catering, and entertainment? Planning a wedding is serious business so don’t hesitate to call in the pros.

Choose a Theme

table set with white plates and green leaves for decoration.

When it comes to backyard weddings, choosing a theme should be one of your first priorities. Why not play off your beautiful outdoor space? Think of adding floral accents or greenery to your backyard d茅cor for a botanical touch. If you’ve set the date for an autumn wedding, opt for rustic details like twine and seasonal gourds for good measure. This is your moment to go all in on inspiration for a truly memorable event.

Dazzle Your Guests

Outdoor events make the most of natural lighting, especially for daytime events at the height of summer. If your big day is scheduled toward evening, do not forget to create a dazzling display of glowing lights for continued festivities! If your backyard consists of several wide-open spaces, consider arranging en masse for a phantom structural effect. Other options like floating candles, lanterns or luminous strands add the final touch to a perfect evening.

Perfect the Landscaping

A man adjusts sprinklers to care for a lawn.

When was the last time you put your backyard under a microscope? It may be fine for an impromptu barbeque, but a wedding is a category all its own. You may have guessed that requires maintenance and possibly improvements before the big shebang. Start looking at your grass and gravel so you can fill in bare or thin spaces ahead of the event. Your yard may need patch repair or long-term treatment for picture-perfect results, so start early. Finally, make a note to turn off the sprinklers during the event!

Get Permission

People are used to entertaining at home though they rarely invite the whole neighborhood. For that reason, it’s easy to forget about permits when hosting at home. Check with your local county or municipality to see what’s required before going ahead with any plans. As for potential incidents with guests, vendors, or other mishaps, understanding the legalities ahead of time is never a bad idea.

Expect the Unexpected

Purple sashes hang from the ceiling of a white tent set up for a backyard wedding.

In a perfect world, we would all get married under sunny skies with a gentle breeze. Although weather is often a gamble that cannot be controlled, you can always have a backup plan if mother nature chooses not to cooperate. If your heart is set on hosting the event completely outdoors, consider opting for tent or canopy solutions. These can provide shade during the warmer times of the day and protection from rain or cool breezes in the evenings. Not to mention, this dedicated space can be decorated to create the ultimate romantic setting for any backyard wedding.

Back to Basics

Sometimes, event planning is about more than just beauty. For example, is your backyard as flat as a Kansas cornfield? As silly as it sounds, both dancefloor setup and guest seating depend on level ground. Companies specializing in outdoor events can help you with logistics as well as related rentals so be sure to ask plenty of questions early on.

Extra Accommodations

A man hands the valet the keys to his car.

Hosting an event at home may seem like an idyllic plan (and indeed, it is!), but what might not cross your mind is all the services that go along with it. For example, have you thought about for all your guests? How about a generator for the extra electricity needed? Is there ample parking in your neighborhood, and do you need to consider valet or shuttle services? Your caterer may also need to make special arrangements for prep, cooking, and timely serving. For as many upsides as there are to hosting your own backyard bonanza, it does have its challenges.

Safety Considerations

There are a few safety issues to consider when hosting an event on your own property. For one thing, added insurance may not be a bad idea. Think of it this way: dozens of people passing through for a backyard wedding is not business as usual. Review your existing policies and talk to your insurance broker about what protections you will want to have in place. It may also be wise to cover your pool and limit your home’s entry. While accidents are unlikely, you’re better off covering all your bases.

Spread the Word

A woman notifies her neighbor of her backyard wedding plans.

Another way to prepare for your big event is by politely letting the neighbors know ahead of time. That way, they’ll be able to make their own plans with ample notice or avoid scheduling home repairs on the same day. Obviously, there is no way to block out all ambient noise or mute your neighbors- that is part of the package when it comes to at-home weddings. However, it is still smart and considerate to communicate regularly for minimal intrusion.

Final Thoughts

Hosting a backyard wedding can be the chance of a lifetime. Make sure you are in the know about what needs to happen to pull off a memorable day. From permits to perennials and everything in between, careful planning is key. Best of luck with your backyard bash!

Are you pumped for summer but not for the backyard prep? We have you covered! Embracing the season should be anything but stressful. Here are some ways to fast-track your backyard for summer poolside vibes and serious relaxation.

Think in Color

One of the best ways to welcome summer is by going all in on your color schemes. Think beachy tones or bright, happy hues for a seasonal touch. Coordinated and eclectic color palettes are both on the table but be sure to choose one or the other before going full steam ahead.

Backyard patio set with bright orange striped cushions and a yellow chaise lounge
Bright fabrics and patterns give a cheery, summer feel.

There are tons of strategies to add color to your backyard but focusing on high-traffic areas is always a smart first step. Use tropical colors on your table or dinnerware to brighten up outdoor dining. If furniture is your thing, or throws let you build on your basics for a fresh spin on seasonal.

Plant Party in the Backyard

Select flowers with a pop of color that thrive in the summer months.

Nothing says summer like blooms and foliage! While color is part of the equation, choosing your plants by climate is just as important. Pick low-key perennials for lasting color and volume or revamp your garden on a yearly whim. Plants are as personal as any other design preference so choose something you love for your own beachy haven.

Another plant possibility involves exploring your artistic talent with a little DIY. For this project, you鈥檒l need an array of terra cotta planters and acrylic paints in your favorite shades. Go monochromatic for a more streamlined look or treat every piece as an original: the important thing is to have a plan and go all in.

Fancy Feet

Artificial grass stays green despite the summer sun.

Next, get ready to elevate your digs by focusing on foot-friendly spaces. If green grass is hard to come by or difficult to maintain, think about giving a chance. Use it to create a seasonal carpet or play place for your kids. You鈥檒l be happy to know it stands up to pets and kids better than traditional grass for durability you can count on.

Outdoor rugs are another low-key option for backyard beauty. Are you interested in pattern, weather resistance, coverage or comfort? Some styles require more care than others so find out which materials work best for your space. Beyond practicalities, rugs make excellent statement pieces based on size alone. Remember dark colors absorb the most heat so lighter shades provide the right amount of summer chill.

Texture

Texture tends to get overlooked as design elements go. It鈥檚 so perfect for warm weather and outdoor spaces that it鈥檇 be silly not to use it. Materials like jute, rattan and sisal are rustic yet effortlessly casual for an understated oasis. Bring a coarse weave or tactile touch into the fold for a touch of summer serenity.

Use bold prints in rugs or textured pillows to make your space welcoming.

If you don鈥檛 feel the feels when it comes to texture, bold visuals might be a better alternative. Warm vibes have everything to do with full expression and unapologetic prints, so do not be afraid to jump right in. Create your own cocktail of tactile and visual magic for a summer worth remembering.

Backyard Space Savers

Folding furniture can be beautiful, comfortable, and a great way to provide seats for backyard guests.

Are you hoping for a light and easy summer setup? Foldable furniture is one way to lighten your load, though metal auditorium chairs are not the only option. These chairs come in umpteen styles, colors and materials to suit your mood. Believe it or not, chairs aren鈥檛 the only collapsible design find. Folding tables are more of an anomaly though they鈥檙e worth the hunt. Just think of all the energy you鈥檒l save when it comes to prep!

Furniture isn鈥檛 the only way to use your space wisely. Choose foldable parasols or oversized umbrellas for maximum shade and minimal storage for another win-win. Depending on your individual backyard, a shade sail provides refuge from the sun in the smallest possible package.

Patio Lighting

String lights are easy to install and provide nice ambiance for outdoor spaces.

Think of lighting as the icing on the cake of your outdoor retreat. There are dozens of styles available for nearly instant gratification. Consider for large, colorful accents or string lights for a more festive look. If you鈥檙e looking to illuminate walkways or footpaths, let rope lights guide the way. They add a playful touch to any backyard for the latest in stylish safety.

We tend to associate candles with winter d茅cor but there鈥檚 no reason they鈥檙e not invited to the party. Tealights make a simple addition to any table while repurposed wine bottles, mason jars or glass cannisters keep flames protected. Use a mix of fun and functional lighting as the final touch to your enchanted enclave.

Final Thoughts

Combining home and summer brings together comfort and tranquility for the best of both worlds. Create your design with simplicity in mind for a chill start to the season. Have any time-saving tips or design hacks to share? Be sure to leave them! In the meantime, here鈥檚 to lazy days and balmy nights right around the corner.

The summer months are the time to relax and take in the sunshine! But it can also be a great time to get some much needed home improvement projects done around the house that aren鈥檛 possible to do in bad weather. Check out these five tasks that will make your home the hit of the summer and don鈥檛 cost you a large chunk of cash.

Power Wash

We always think about washing the inside of our home but what about the outside? The summer is a great time to either buy or rent a power washing machine to get your exterior cleaned and looking brand new. You can power wash the siding of the home to remove dirt and grime collected from outdoor elements over the seasons or you can wash the walkways including sidewalks and driveways.

Build Outdoor Features

If you have some downtime and it鈥檚 a beautiful day outside, it鈥檚 a great opportunity to build an outdoor feature! This could include an outdoor kitchen to entertain guests throughout the summer, a fire pit to roast marshmallows with the kids or maybe a garden to grow your own veggies. Each project ranges from difficulty and cost so make sure to determine timeline and budget before starting the project. Once you decide on those, have some fun designing what fits your style best!

Re-stain Wood

Your porch, deck and fence can fade quickly from the sun and harsh outdoor elements. The summer may be a good time to re-stain the wood of your outdoor spaces and outdoor furniture if applicable. This ensures your home looks flawless when you have guests over for an outdoor get together. If you live in a place with sunshine most of the year, the colors can fade quickly and may require more than one re-staining.

Window Cleanings

During a nice day, it鈥檚 always great to open the blinds and fill your home with natural light. Of course, if your windows are full of spots from the harsh Winter or rainy Spring, the view isn鈥檛 quite so great! Giving your windows a quick and easy wash at the beginning of summer is a great way to ensure your windows look brand new. Plus this project can be fun for the whole family to get the kids involved, as long as the windows aren鈥檛 too high. If your windows are at a higher and more dangerous height, there are plenty of companies to hire that will do this for you at a reasonable price.

Drain Water Heater

Although this task may not seem very fun, draining your water heater can help improve the efficiency and make it last longer, saving you money later on. Over time, sediment build-up can settle on the bottom of the heater, reducing capacity and possibly interfering with ongoing maintenance. By draining the water and removing the sediment, your heater will work faster and last longer. Depending on the size of your heater, this project can take up to 30 minutes, but only has to be done once or twice a year.

The summer months are a great time to improve your home on the inside, but especially the outdoors as you enjoy the fresh air and nice weather. Of course, there are several other DIY options you could get started so make sure just to look at the time you have and the money you want to spend to find the right project for you.

Halloween is right around the corner, but not everything has to be super scary in order to be fun! Here鈥檚 our guide to creating a spooky haunted house that is kid-approved and just the right amount of creepy for your kids to have fun this season.

Carve pumpkins

Whether you carve real pumpkins or you opt for fake pumpkins, you can鈥檛 go wrong with using jack-o-lanterns to set the mood. The more lanterns and candles (even battery-operated) you use, the more spooky lighting you can have to decorate your haunted house! We suggest purchasing plastic or foam jack-o-lanterns from your local craft store and getting the kids involved. You can find this for an affordable price and carve as many as you want to use them to decorate the whole house.

Orange string lights and blacklights

In addition to using jack-o-lanterns to set the scene of spooky lighting, you can use orange string lights throughout your house. String these on the wall, mantel, staircase, doorway, and other areas to help give your haunted house an orange-y glow. You can also replace the light bulbs of other light fixtures with black-lights to add some purple spookiness.听

Spooky playlist

Look up a spooky Halloween playlist on Spotify or YouTube to really set the mood. This can be as scary as you want it to be, so if you want more playful tunes for younger kids or more scary tunes for older kids, you can customize the background music to fit the age of your haunted house participants.

Face painting

Get your kids involved by painting their faces like spooky monsters! Whether they want to be zombies, pirates, witches, werewolves, or even Frankenstein, your kids will feel spooky and just scary enough to get in on the haunted house fun.

DIY trash bag ghosts

Fill large white garbage bags with leaves from your yard and use a black permanent marker to draw ghost faces on them. If you want to make it a little spookier, opt for scary ghost faces and hang the leaf-filled bags from a tree in your front or back yard!

Tattered curtains

You can create your own tattered haunted house curtains very easily! Purchase cheesecloth at your local craft store, soak it in black tea, let it dry, and tear it as much as you want to give it a tattered, old look. You can even add some fake spiderwebs and plastic spiders and bugs here and there (as well as around your house) to make it look really spooky.

DIY graveyard

Using Styrofoam and plastic bones, you can create your own graveyard. The gravestones made of Styrofoam can have silly sayings on them like those at Disney鈥檚 Haunted Mansion attraction, or they can be a bit spookier if you expect to have older kids at your haunted house. Scatter the fake bones throughout your yard for an even creepier effect.

Haunted scavenger hunt

Turn your house or yard into a haunted scavenger hunt. Hide smaller items like plastic spiders and eyeballs or even larger items like witch hats and skeletons or bones all around your property. Give the kids a list of all the items hidden around the house and give the winner a fun prize — it can be as simple as extra candy!

Feeling safe in your home is always the number one priority. Whether you are preparing to be on vacation, don鈥檛 want to worry while your out of the home or just want to deter visitors from snooping through personal belongings, there are plenty of easy ways to secure your home for when you aren鈥檛 around. Check out these tips below and let the worry disappear.

  1. Alarm Cabinet

Maybe you鈥檙e having a party or company is staying with you from out of town. We all have those nosey houseguests that may go through cabinets or drawers, but an easy way to deter them is having cabinet alarms. This way the spaces will be locked and only accessible to the homeowner. This is also a great way to keep kids away from anything dangerous under sinks or in bathroom vanities.听

  1. Break Down Cardboard

In the days of online ordering, many entryways are filled with large boxes. Although some may be small, these boxes can draw attention and advertise that you have brand new items in your home like TVs or technology systems. If you break down the boxes and place them in the back of your vehicle or a covered bin, potential burglars will be less inclined to visit your home because there isn鈥檛 an obvious sign of anything new or expensive.

  1. Beware of Dog

You don鈥檛 need a dog to put out a 鈥渂eware of dog鈥 sign. These signs could simply be used to make intruders think twice before entering the home. A home with a dog is a much higher risk for burglars as they will be easily detected and could be attacked.

  1. Reinforce Your Window Locks

Making sure your windows are locked is essential if traveling out of town but also in everyday life. Windows on the first floor are especially easy access points for breaking and entering. Check your locks and to further prevent break-ins, put a dowel rod on the inside of the window slide. This helps ensure that if anyone would try to enter through the window, it won鈥檛 be able to open no matter if the lock is latched or not.

Overall, you can never be too careful when it comes to protecting your home. Expensive security alarms or cameras are always an option but if you are looking for more affordable, faster and easier ways, try out these methods.

Finding inspiration to update and renovate your home is easier than ever. From tutorials available online to shows centered around the process of home remodeling, more and more homeowners are taking on the task of completing projects themselves. Although conquering these projects on your own may help your renovation budget, it鈥檚 important to be conscious of the unexpected dangers that may arise throughout the process. . If you鈥檙e thinking about taking on a project like this, here are a few tips to help protect you as well as give your home the upgrade it needs.

Be Prepared From The Start

Despite taking protective measures, accidents are likely to occur and it鈥檚 important to be prepared. At the start of your project, make sure you have a first aid kit nearby. Never start your project while tired and be aware of the area you are working in. Your workstation should be equipped with an updated fire extinguisher in case of a possible electrical or chemical fire. For any serious injuries, seek care from a medical professional as soon as possible. Do your research to make sure you feel confident about starting your DIY project, but if you are unsure of what steps to take next, look into hiring professional help.

Have The Right Equipment

At the start of your DIY renovation, research the necessary to wear. Safety gloves and eyewear will help protect your skin and eyes from irritation. For projects that require sanding, plastering, or painting, invest in a mask to protect your lungs from harmful fumes. Make sure to wear noise-cancelling headphones and earplugs to protect your hearing from loud and noisy power tools.

Power tools make the renovation process easier but can be dangerous when not used properly. Take additional steps when possible to avoid any mishaps or injuries. When you鈥檙e not using these tools, make sure to turn the safety on, keep it unplugged and out of reach from small children or animals. Always be aware of the tools proximity to your body and make sure you鈥檙e not wearing any loose fabric. Taking extra precaution when utilizing power tools can help ensure your renovation goes quickly and safely.

Protect Furniture and Valuables

Before starting your renovation project, prepare your space with the proper coverage to protect against potential stains or damage. Invest in tarps and plastic coverings that can help keep furniture, flooring, counter tops, and other surfaces neat and clean. This task may seem tedious and unnecessary, but ultimately taking the time to cover your belongings can protect against聽 possible DIY accidents.

Be Cautious of Harmful Substances

It鈥檚 important to know the year your house was built as well as the history of previous renovations completed prior to tackling your new project. In houses built prior to 1980, the natural mineral, asbestos was used in building products such as insulation, floor tiles, plaster, and cement. When asbestos is disturbed, hazardous fibers are released into the air and can cause inflammation as well as tumors to develop within the lungs. This form of lung damage could potentially lead to the , which can be found in the lining of the lungs. Homeowners should never attempt to remove asbestos on their own. Prior to the start of a renovation, homeowners should seek out a licensed and certified asbestos abatement professional to inspect the home for asbestos containing materials are present.

If you鈥檙e working in spaces that are prone to dampness, be aware of the . Basements, drywall, and bathrooms are a few of the top places mold thrives and are most likely to put you and your loved ones at risk of exposure. Exposure to this harmful substance can lead to future health concerns as well as structural damage to your home. A professional removal service can evaluate the damage caused by mold, as well as formulate a plan to remove the mold safely.

If your house was built before 1978, there is a chance that lead-based paint was used in the interior and exterior of your home. If lead paint chips or dust is ingested, the toxic metals in this paint can cause serious health problems. Although these toxic metals are dangerous for everyone, . If you live in an older home, consider hiring a professional to test the paint, water, and dust in your home for lead.

Common Mistakes

At the start of a project, there is inspiration and motivation to complete the job the best you can. Homeowners often begin to realize their renovation is taking longer than they had planned and begin to rush. Rushing can lead to an incomplete final project聽 which could be costly to fix and potentially dangerous to you and your loved ones. Take your time and make sure all of the details are in order before moving forward.

Construction projects release a variety of fumes and debris into the air. Breathing in these particles can be extremely dangerous for your health, especially if exposed for a long period of time. Make sure the space that you are working in is properly ventilated with an open window, air filters, or a fan to disperse toxic fumes. Wearing a mask is helpful but you also want to make sure that your space is clear of all dust and smells when your work day is finished.

At the end of your project, make sure you clean up. Leaving behind small materials like nails, glass, or splinters can lead to big hospital trips in the future. Unplug and put away all power tools as well as harmful chemicals that may be fatal if ingested. Taking these steps to clean up your work space can further eliminate the dangers you worked diligently to prevent during the renovation process.

Do-it-yourself projects can be fun, save you money, and be immensely rewarding. For major renovations or projects that affect the overall value of your home, it鈥檚 best to seek out the help of professionals. Your home is a large investment and through taking necessary precautions you can do your best to minimize potential risks of a DIY project gone wrong. Do your research and don鈥檛 be afraid to reach out to a professional for a quote on a project you might feel unsure about.

Home renovations offer the perfect opportunity to upgrade the functionality of your home, in addition to modernizing the design and feel of your space.

Here are five clever features you should consider including in your next renovation to elevate your home鈥檚 functionality.

1. Smart Systems

Today鈥檚 homes are smart. They incorporate technology to make our lives safer, easier, more energy efficient, and more enjoyable.

If you鈥檙e renovating, you鈥檇 be wise to include a smart system that can handle these tasks for you:

  • Lighting: Lights on a motion sensor can save on energy usage, and lights on automatic timers give the impression that the home is occupied even while you鈥檙e away on vacation.
  • Heating and air: Smart thermostats allow you to automate the temperature in your home and even control it from your phone. You can give the HVAC system a rest while you鈥檙e at work during the day, then turn it on remotely so the house is the perfect temperature when you arrive home. 聽
  • Multimedia: With voice activation, you can turn on your sound system, video call family, or start your favorite TV show by just stating orders out loud. Your house is at your command.
  • Home monitoring: Security cameras, noise detectors, and motion sensors can all be installed to help protect your home. Smart monitoring systems can send you a text alert if a potential problem is detected.

Smart systems have you covered!

2. Walk-In Showers

Not only do walk-in showers look sleek, but they are also a smart safety feature.

Many at-home falls happen while climbing out of slippery tub/showers. Walk-in showers dramatically reduce this risk by eliminating the need to climb over a wall every time you get in and out of the shower.

3. In-Wall Pest Control

If you鈥檒l be opening up your walls, make a little extra investment in in-wall pest control.

In-wall pest control uses a network of small cables running through the walls to distribute pest control chemicals throughout the structure. Just spray the chemicals into the network entrance points regularly to maintain a pest-free home. 聽聽聽

4. Pull-Out Cabinets

Pull-out cabinets are a genius solution for homes with limited counter space. These cabinets tuck neatly under your existing counters, looking like standard cabinets. But when you need a bigger work surface, you can roll these cabinets out and use the finished tops to extend your counter space.

And these are ideal for more than just kitchens. You could also use pull-out cabinets in your home office, garage, and hobby room!

5. Clever Storage Spots

Traditional builds often leave some space wasted. Which is a shame because we all need more storage. Take a few notes from creative tiny-house builders who know how to maximize storage space:

  • Install pull-out drawers for shoe storage under the staircase where the space is too short to store much else.
  • Create a raised platform in the playroom so you can store lots of the toys in the space between the existing floor and the new platform floor.
  • Add baseboard drawers under kitchen cabinets to store thin items like baking trays, muffin tins, and cooling racks.

Don鈥檛 just settle for a more pleasing aesthetic with your next home renovation. Use these tips to improve the function of your home at the same time!

DYI

With the autumn season in full force and Thanksgiving approaching, you may want your home to feel cozy and fall-themed. Here are nine Thanksgiving DIY projects to celebrate the Thanksgiving season this year.

A chalkboard menu is a versatile creation because it doubles as a functional item and as decor that can be used in your home in every season. You can use a frame you already own or purchase a vintage one from an antique or thrift store. Purchase a thin piece of wood that will fit inside the frame and paint it with black chalkboard paint. Voila! You have a lovely framed piece of chalkboard to use for your Thanksgiving menu and beyond. To add some autumnal flair, decorate the corners of the frame with faux leaves or gold glitter:

Centerpieces can completely transform the look of your dining table. You can DIY a centerpiece for your autumn tablescape by simply arranging fall-colored flowers in a mason jar, placing candles on a piece of wood from the craft store, or even painting pumpkins. Whatever centerpiece you choose to DIY, it will take minimal effort to create something beautiful.

If you鈥檙e hosting a Thanksgiving dinner at your home, place settings are a great way to add some noticeable decorations without completely cluttering your dinner table. Take a miniature pumpkin or gourd and tie your favorite cloth ribbon or twine around it. Write or print each guest鈥檚 name onto a card and attach this to the pumpkin. These place settings are decorative and functional, and each guest can take theirs home as a souvenir, too.

The holidays bring the season of giving, and what is better to give than gratitude? You can practice gratitude throughout the Thanksgiving season by doing 鈥渢hankful for鈥 activities by yourself or with your family. Create a 鈥淭hanksgiving tree鈥 by hanging paper leaves with notes of thankfulness on dry sticks or a shrub in your home. Make a thankfulness jar by submitting a note of what you and your family are thankful for each day leading up to Thanksgiving and read the notes on Thanksgiving Day. Or you can keep a gratitude journal during this season and challenge yourself to write in it each day.

Carving pumpkins is a great Halloween tradition, but pumpkin decorations can last through the fall season, too. This year, decorate pumpkins (either faux or real) with paint, glitter, or ribbon and use them as Thanksgiving decorations throughout your home.

Your home may smell delicious when you鈥檙e cooking on Thanksgiving Day, but what about throughout the rest of the month? You can easily spread lovely fall scents throughout your home by simmering some spices and citrus peels in a pot of water over your stove or dropping some essential oils on pinecones and placing them around your home.

Dried corn husks make for great DIY supplies, and you can dry these yourself or order some on Amazon. Keep the corn husks their natural color or paint them a color of your choosing, then arrange them in the shape of a wreath to hang behind a chair at your table or on a door in your home. This is a great project that you can reuse year after year.

Pinecones make great decorations throughout fall and winter, from the start of Halloween through the end of the Christmas season, but they are especially lovely during Thanksgiving. You can decorate your house with dry pinecones by arrange them as a table centerpiece, setting them atop your counter with candles, or even stacking them in a glass jar with some white lights and faux leaves. Pinecones are versatile and affordable decorations, so no matter how you arrange them, they are sure to spruce up any home.

You can make a fall garland out of anything, but using paintable items is a great way to put your own spin on a timeless decoration. Purchase some fall leaves at an affordable price and decorate them using white paint and gold glitter. Arrange them in a pattern with some lightweight faux acorns and even pinecones, and you have the perfect Thanksgiving decoration to match the atmosphere of your home. There are many ways to DIY a garland, so put your own spin on it to achieve a look that you love.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!
